Did you know that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has a medical services and first aid standard?

It states that first aid should be used in the absence of an infirmary, clinic or hospital in near proximity to the workplace. And, adequate first aid supplies should always be readily available. 

While OSHA’s standard doesn’t list specific contents for first aid kits, the agency’s guidance states that supplies must be adequate and reflect common injuries relating to the work environment.

Kits must be stored in an area that is easy to access in case of emergency.

 

First Aid Kit Standards 

 

OSHA cites the American National Standards Institute/International Safety Equipment Association standard Z308:1.

The standard works as a recommendation, or non-mandatory guidance, for the minimum first aid kit requirements. One of its revisions, Z308.1-2015, introduced two classes of first aid kits: “Class A” and “Class B.” 

Class-A kits are more basic – generally suited for all wounds, minor burns and eye injuries. Class-B kits treat injuries found in more densely populated workplaces with complex environments, such as warehouses, factories, and outdoor areas. 

Here are the minimum recommended kit supplies: 

  • Adhesive bandages
  • Adhesive tape 
  • Antibiotic application 
  • Antiseptic
  • Breathing barrier
  • Burn dressing (gel soaked)
  • Burn treatment 
  • Cold pack
  • Eye coverings (with means of attachement)
  • Eye/skin wash
  • First aid guide 
  • Hand sanitizer 
  • Medical exam gloves
  • Roller bandage (2-inch) and (4-inch)
  • Scissors
  • Splint
  • Sterile pads
  • Tourniquet 
  • Trauma pads
  • Triangular bandage

First aid kits, in compliance with the standard, feature supplies that are organized by color:

  • Blue for antiseptics,
  • red for burn treatment,
  • yellow for bandages,
  • orange for personal protective equipment, and
  • green for miscellaneous items.

In addition to color organization, the kits are organized into one of four types based on work environment. 

  • Type I: Containers are mountable and intended for stationary, indoor settings.
  • Type II: Portable and intended for indoor use.
  • Type III: Must be portable, mountable and have a water-resistant seal.
  • Type IV: Must be portable, mountable and waterproof.

 

Where to Buy an Approved First Aid Kit 

 

Most industrial distributors of PPE and safety equipment offer compliant first aid kits.

They are also likely available through first aid organizations or suppliers of fire extinguishers. All kits should list that it is ANSI-approved and have the dates of the latest version.
